Singing in the Rain

Comments Off on Singing in the Rain

I just saw a post on Facebook about grilling in Texas. It depicted some folks grilling in a hail storm holding a kid’s wading pool as an umbrella and it reminded me of this.

August 5th, 2012. It’s my birthday.  My wife and daughter are back in the USA visiting college campuses looking at potential schools for my daughter’s future.

Alone, I decide to celebrate by grilling a steak and catching the latest James Bond film.  After taking care of a few chores like mowing the lawn, etc, I fire up the grill and prep the steak.

As soon as the steak hits the grill, a storm rolls in.  It is raining harder than I have ever seen it. But this is England. It will pass in a minute or two. I look at my watch, anxiously waiting for the rain to stop so I can flip the steak. The minutes tick by and the rain just keeps coming harder. I know that the steak must be flipped NOW. So, I dash outside to the grill, and in one swift motion, open the lid, flip the steak, close the lid and dash back inside.

I am soaked to the bone.

Again, the minutes tick by and my steak MUST be removed or become inedible. Yet the rain just keeps coming.

So, once again I dash outside to the grill, and in one swift motion, open the lid, plate the steak, close the lid and dash back inside. As I was closing the lid and turning toward the door, the hail came. As I entered the house, dripping wet from head to toe, I looked at my freshly grilled meal. My steak was now floating in the plate, covered in hail like some bizarre meat flavored sno-cone.

I decided that I was done for the day. I stripped out of my wet clothes, emptied the hail from the plate, poured myself a good three fingers of Scotch, and cancelled my movie plans.

Halfway through my steak and whisky, the storm passed. The sun shone warm and bright, birds were singing, and I finished my steak and poured myself another drink.

Happy Birthday to me.

Sometimes you just have to laugh at the curveballs life throws at you. But remember…

Life is a sandwich. Eat it up!
